One of the more recent, “Paul’s Firewood and Bait Shop”
has been in business since nineteen eighty-seven. It was started by Paul
Alfieri in that year and has been in business since then. The shop sells
knives, fishing wares, live bait and an exceptional variety of swords and
novelty knives.
“J. O’Rourke and Son’s”, founded by James O’Rourke, is
one of the other businesses. They specialized in general contracting, and also
did mortar work. James O’Rourke retired, leaving the business to his two sons,
Gary and Tim O’Rourke. Years later, Tim bought out his brother for sole
ownership, so that he is now the present owner.
“J. R. Eldredge Co.”, another recent business, was
founded by Ruth and Joseph Eldredge in nineteen seventy. The business
specializes in propane, fuel oil, gasoline and indoor heating. The present
proprietors are Jeff, Bob and Bonnie Eldredge.
There
are also several older businesses in the town. “Charlie John’s” was originally
where the “Lane Emporium” is now. “Stephenson’s” was a bowling alley and the
upper floor was used as a meeting hall. Dances were held there and a band
used to play. The “Tamarack” was a theatre. The father of Michael Douglas,
Kirk Douglas, was in a play there. The “Day Treatment” building was a grocery
store originally, then became a pharmacy, and then moved on to the present
“Sunmount Day Treatment” center.
