Lake Pleasant has a long, flourishing history. Recreation, business, and historical sites play a large part in this history. Along with more recent businesses, there are those that have been here for decades.

One of the more recent, “Paul’s Firewood and Bait Shop” has been in business since nineteen eighty-seven. It was started by Paul Alfieri in that year and has been in business since then. The shop sells knives, fishing wares, live bait and an exceptional variety of swords and novelty knives.

“J. O’Rourke and Son’s”, founded by James O’Rourke, is one of the other businesses. They specialized in general contracting, and also did mortar work. James O’Rourke retired, leaving the business to his two sons, Gary and Tim O’Rourke. Years later, Tim bought out his brother for sole ownership, so that he is now the present owner.

“J. R. Eldredge Co.”, another recent business, was founded by Ruth and Joseph Eldredge in nineteen seventy. The business specializes in propane, fuel oil, gasoline and indoor heating. The present proprietors are Jeff, Bob and Bonnie Eldredge.

There are also several older businesses in the town. “Charlie John’s” was originally where the “Lane Emporium” is now. “Stephenson’s” was a bowling alley and the upper floor was used as a meeting hall. Dances were held there and a band used to play. The “Tamarack” was a theatre. The father of Michael Douglas, Kirk Douglas, was in a play there. The “Day Treatment” building was a grocery store originally, then became a pharmacy, and then moved on to the present “Sunmount Day Treatment” center.

These are but a few of the businesses that added to the flourishing history of Lake Pleasant.
